New Dog

So what we went and did over the weekend was we went and got a new dog.

The old dog is distressed, but man, whatever. He's an old dog. Make way for Dog Progress!

New dog's from the shelter (which I guess is different from "the pound") and predictably undisciplined, but a sweetie nonetheless.

She seems to be some greyhound and some other thing. My own scientific analysis is: dalmatian or beagle or something. She's got a build I like to call "rangy."

We don't have a name for her yet. The shelter called her "Cricket" but M had a dog named Cricket when she was a kid, and you can't double up on these things. Also, why name your animal after another animal? Does anyone name their dog "Dromedary" or "Panda"?*

Here is a partial list of potential names, most of which we have rejected. Feel free to use any of these for your unnamed pets or office supply products:

  • Bathsheba
  • Ranger
  • Gilraen
  • Fletcher
  • Tirade
  • Buechner
  • Zelby
  • Knothead
  • Fortunata
  • Zonks
  • Fake Steve Jobs
  • Coconut
  • Merit

The last two are the current front-runners, but there's plenty of time for something to come out of nowhere and take the lead. Post your suggestions in the comments! If we use the name you suggested, then won't that be great?

*Come to think of it, they probably do.

Very cute pup!

My husband the arbiter of originality, argues that "When it's a good name, you stick with it." As a child, he had three dogs in succession named Buster, before changing things up to name one Custer.

How about Minute? Or Miriam?

Oooh, it's a game. You've just created the hotest new meme of the week: "what would you name this dog?"

Okay, so not really, but I'll play along anyway.

Since you have doggie named Dylan well, that makes me think of classic rock and roll, man. So howabout Janis, or some other musicy name.

Then the greyhound part makes me think of racing. Dannica Patrick is the hot new chica in racing, so Danica or Dani. Also on the greyhound theme it would be amusing (to me at least) to go with Bunny, or Rabbit.

Ya'll got married in Dallas, and that's a fine name. She's speckled, and that's leads to Robin in my contorted thinking.

Gee this is fun! Too bad I need to go put my kids to bed. I'm sure you'll come up with the perfect monniker, in the meantime gratz on the new family member.

sure is a cute dog. I was thinking or Merritt, like with two m's and two t's. Interesting how my brain identifies meanings with spelling. I kept thinking of Mike Merritt who stalked me for a bit in middle school. I like 'Merit' better.
